I'm Voting For McCain Unless

Well you Obama supporters have really ticked me off this time.  I'm outraged about something but I haven't decided what it is yet.  I'm mad at you but I can't pinpoint why I'm mad.  I know Obama will protect a woman's right to choose, promote fair pay for women, enforce the civil right laws, strengthen laws protecting women against violence, sign the Lily Ledbetter Act, keep contraception and birth control legal, (John McCain thinks condoms are abortion), and basically pass 99% of everything on women's issues that My Girl Hillary would have passed.

But I'm voting for McCain unless

1.  You say you are sorry to me even if you did nothing wrong.

2.  You bow in my presence by waiving both arms downwards and saying, "You are the Greatest."

3.  You will bake me an apple pie.  It must be at least 10 inches round.

4.  The box that you bake me my applie pie in should contain a wad of $100 bills.  A minimum of 10 is required.  You must not tell anyone though.

5.  You promise to front page one of out every four diaries I write.  I want to feel important.

6.  You tell me at least three times a day that I am the nicest person you've ever met.  You don't have to include weekends though.

If you want me to vote for the person who agrees with Hillary 97% of the time instead of the person who agrees with Hillary 10% of the time, you must give in to my demands.

If "according to some ... supporters" (2.00 / 2)

is your test for a candidate, you'll never vote again.  Some people are flat-out nuts, and a bigger portion are just silly, especially when emotions run high.

Personally, I didn't think it was something she needed to apologize to Obama for certainly -- it wasn't any sort of direct knock.  However, it was a pretty damned tin-eared thing to say for someone so politically astute.

And for the record, regardless of what "some supporters" think, I have basically the same opinion about Bill's "Jesse Jackson won South Carolina twice" statement.  I know what he was getting at, and Bill's not a racist, but it was a bad, bad way to say it, and he knows better.

So... "some supporters" say things like this, too.

She should have apologized.  Intentionally or not, she implied that Obama may suffer some kind of "accident."  She certainly wasn't calling for it or hoping it would happen.  And she probably didn't even mean for it to be interpreted that way.  But it was.

That's like saying "Hey Hillary, I can't help it.  Sometimes Presidents get caught fooling around with interns and such.  Oh!  I didn't mean Bill!"

I disagree.  She was saying that sometimes unpredictable things happen late in primaries.  I don't think she meant it this way, but I took it as "When those unpredictable and tragic things happen, someone has to be there to pick up the pieces.  That's me."

Re: not to nitpick (2.00 / 2)

RFK had only entered the primary a month before he was killed.  In those days, the primaries began much later.

So unless she doesn't know the history, the only way her statement makes sense is if she meant "anything can happen".  That's what I thought she meant.  I may have been wrong.

Re: You are perpetuating a lie. (2.00 / 2)

If you have no response other than to attack me, then you may be over your head.

You said she only mentioned RFK to illustrate the length of primaries.  I told you that that makes no sense because RFK's primary was very SHORT.  Not long.  Short.

I also allowed that I might be wrong in what I thought she meant, but that she couldn't have possibly have just been illustrating long primaries.  Why?  Because RFK's primary was very SHORT.  Obama/Clinton was LONG.

I may, however, be wrong.  I'm trying to be diplomatic but you're frustrating me.

Look, just answer this: why would she use RFK to illustrate a long primary, when it illustrates just the opposite?  Any reasonable answer will do, but try not to namecall.

Re: You are perpetuating a lie. (2.00 / 2)

Then what happened was that she didn't know that RFK entered the race much later than she had.

At any rate, her words were wide open to interpretation. As I've unsuccessfully tried to explain, on their face they make no sense - the 1968 primary was short.  Go back and read your post explaining what she meant - you said it had to do with long primaries.  RFK was a short primary.

I hate to keep hammering at this but I don't understand why misunderstanding what she meant, given that it was based on a historical inaccuracy, is so outrageous.  And I don't know why you felt like you had to insult me.

Re: not to nitpick (none / 0)

I know what you are saying and I agree with the idea behind it-- the primary cycles between 1968 and 2008 (or probably between any two election cycles since 1968) are simply not comparable.  But in point of fact, the 1968 New Hampshire primary was held on March 12th.  Kennedy, of course, was shot on June 5th, the night of the California primary (or perhaps it was past midnight, I'd need to check).  And the New York primary hadn't happened yet.

Re: not to nitpick (none / 0)

What does it matter?  It had nothing to do with Obama.  Her and RFK's run have a number of similarities.  Both ran in wide open primaries.  They won a number of the same states, lost a number of the same states, were popular in the Appalachia, were criticized for being the political insider in the race, and for only being where they were becuase of their name, and were both Senator's of New York.  She probably thought about his run a lot more than Kennedy running against an incumbant Carter.  Why can't you just accept the fact that she was talking about herself and not Obama?

You're being obtuse (none / 0)

Combine her statement with Ickes statement about an "October surprise" and it was pretty clear that she was waiting for a "mistake" to occur.  I don't believe that the mistake was suppose to be an assassination, but ocnsidering that she herself had stopped using the "a" word in two prior speeches gives credence that she knew it was a hot button topic.

That being said, both her examples, JFK and Bill's 92 campaign, were poorly chosen.  Especially since the NYT crowned Bill in March after Dukakis dropped out (I provided a link ages ago) and RFK's campaign, where the primary season was only one month old.

And Masslib, if you want to make the "simplistic" argument that June 2007 = June 1968, you can't be surprised if the folks around here who lived in 1968 are calling it BS.  It's not apples to apples, not even close.

Bonus props for the Lily Ledbetter act, that's one of those odd issues that I never thought got as much attention as it deserved in the media-at-large. When I finally read about it (page 16 of a local newspaper), I ended up reading the article twice because it was so absurd I thought I missed something the first time through.

And now, some google bombing. Also, a similarly snarky video that's been making the rounds this morning.

Vote Republican! Go John McCain!

Re: Very cute. (2.00 / 2)

Agreed on Ledbetter.  What drove me crazy was that my dad was talking to me about it and said "why'd so many Democrats vote against it?"  I said, um, no, I don't think any did.

So he forwards me the AP article, which states "the bill failed, 56-42."

However, the 56 votes were votes in FAVOR, a fact that the article failed to note.  The AP had just decided to pretend the filibusterers were in the majority, rather than 42 holdouts.  It was unreal.

Re: Just like all the McCain diaries? (2.00 / 1)

I am guilty of only reading diaries that interest me.  The diaries about voting for McCain are not included in that group.  I would like to go around and fight with fellow Democrats over this issue... oh wait, no I really wouldn't.  I think either people have made up their minds or they will change their minds after some time passes.  I don't think continually harping on the issue at this point in time is doing anything to help.

You obviously haven't read alegre (2.00 / 6)

or texasdarlin and their faux outrage demanding Obama apologize for every comment by every preacher and every politician and every nutcracker maker and every MSNBC/NBC/CNN commentator who ever said anything that could remotely be construed as unflattering to Hillary. Parody or sarcasm or whatever you want to call it, this isn't too far off the mark. The diarist isn't presuming this is the case for all Hillary supporters or those who aren't sold on Obama for legitimate reasons, this is directed at those stubborn people who wallow in their self-importance.

Re: I'm Voting For McCain Unless (2.00 / 1)

While this may be funny to Obama supporters, (I'm one of them and it kind of is)I don't think this is helpful at this point.  I don't know how I would feel if a candidate I had been devoted to had lost the primary.  I'm only 24, I supported Kerry last time (I know, I know) and haven't had a candidate I truly care about lose ,(a primary that is) and then been expected to turn around and support the person that was battling my candidate.  On the other hand, if people aren't able to realize what's at stake by July, let the mockery begin.

Re: Hillary has endorsed Obama (none / 0)

Of course "you" should listen to her.  But also listen to what the choice is in this election.  For anyone who says they are a Democrat/Liberal/Progressive, John McCain is not acceptable.  My point is purely that people are heavliy emotionally invested and still may need a little more time.  And that being mocked by the winners isn't helpful.  And I'll say it again, in a month, if some people still can't get over it, despite Obama kissing Hillary's feet, despite his support for Hillary's issues, then they deserve to be mocked.  I'm just saying not yet.  I don't know when its appropriate, I just don't feel that now is the right time.  I don't think its helpful to the cause of electing Barack Obama President.

YEs, I know. We've already discussed today how any criticism or seeming criticism of Obama or his supporters automatically makes a person a troll, a McCain hack, or a Republican something or other.

It's like how Bush supporters say of Americans who criticize Bush that they are unAmerican, hate America, and are traitors.

Re: I'm Voting For McCain Unless (2.00 / 4)

You waste a whole LOT of keystrokes.

You have exactly two posts - the first is "wow, is this the kind of change you Obamans are talking about?"

The second is "I've been called a Republican, a hack, and a racist.  The new politics isn't very tolerant, is it".

In the future, just write "1" or "2".  It saves your time, and ours.
